Places to visit

Foix

The Ariège offers lots to do and see other than the fabulous scenery of the cols. Guests with their own cars are especially fortunate in being able to benefit from a wide range of activities, but most places are within reach by bike (or at least the train station) !

We have an extensive 'info corner' at Roquefort with details of all local places of interest, but some ideas include:

Foix - The departmental capital is approximately 40 km from Massat. Visit the chateaux in the old town with its shops and restaurants. French market on Fridays.

St Lizier

St Giron and St Lizier [1, 2] - 23 km from Massat. Visit St Giron on a Saturday morning to experience a large French market. St Lizier (2 km from St Giron), which has the award of one of France's top ten most beautiful towns really is lovely. Visit the cathedral and wander amongst the tiny, steep, winding streets.

Parc de l'Art Préhistorique - approximately 30km from Massat. Large activity park centred around the prehistoric ages.

Caves of Niaux - Approximately 35 km from Massat. Large and impressive cave system accessible by daily tours (book ahead)

Château de Montségur [1, 2] 60-70 km from Massat. Visit the château connected with the Cathars [1, 2], Montségur being one of the best preserved.

Cascade d'Arse

Cascade d'Arse - This is the second highest waterfall in the Pyrenees and is a stunning sight. It is only accessible by foot and a round trip will take arround 4 hours - a good one to visit on a day-off from cycling !

Golf de l'Ariège [1, 2] 40-50 km from Massat. Excellent golf course with fabulous views.

Andora 160 km from Massat. Excellent for duty free shopping, especially electrical goods.

Toulouse 137 km from Massat. Regular trains from Tarascon to this lovely city in which there is lots to do.
